The best kept secret in Yellowstone each spring is that the west gate opens for people-powered transportation from April 4th through April 17th! You can bike, hike, blade, walk or jog into the park from the west gate. And, as long as you leave through the west entrance, there is no fee!
The west gate will be open to pedestrians and bikes for the weekends of March 22nd - 23rd and March 28th - 29th. Then from April 4th to April 17th, the West gate will be open daily for bicycling, walking, jogging, roller blades, roller skis, and similar means of non-motorized travel are permitted between the West Entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs ONLY. The west gate entrance at West Yellowstone will re-open again for motorized, wheeled vehicles on Friday, April 18th. It is a perfect time of year to see baby bison calves without summer crowds and congestion.
