The most famous geyser in the world, Old Faithful is one of the most consistent geysers in Yellowstone. Every 60 minutes to two hours you can witness an amazing display of boiling water erupting that lasts anywhere from 1.5 to 5 minutes. Old Faithful is not the tallest or largest geyser in the park (Steamboat Geyser is) but it's one of the most popular because of its high frequency.

Old Faithful History -
The geyser was named by the first official expedition to Yellowstone National Park, which was the 1870 Washburn Expedition. The members of the team were most impressed by the geyser's size and regularity. Old Faithful has been erupting practically the same way throughout the Park's history. Over time, it has become one of the most studied geysers in the world. Since Yellowstone Park Rangers are able to predict its eruptions rather accurately, Old Faithful is one of the easiest of Yellowstone's large geysers to see. Old Faithful Eruptions -
Eruptions from Old Faithful can shoot anywhere from 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water. The average height of an eruption has been recorded at 145 feet while the highest recorded eruption was 185 feet. Intervals between eruptions averaged 66 minutes in 1939. Today, that average has increased to 90 minutes (due to a 7.3 earthquake in 1959). Since Old Faithful was discovered, nearly 140,000 eruptions have been officially recorded.
