Yellowstone National Park Weather

The climate in the Yellowstone area varies greatly, due to a variety of factors.  Elevation and seasonality are the main factors in temperature and weather changes for both the town of West Yellowstone and the park itself.  Generally, the lower the elevation, the warmer the temperature will be.  At an average altitude of 7,500 feet, you’ll want to be prepared for anything!  When packing for your Yellowstone vacation, be sure to plan for a variety of temperature changes.  If you’re already here, take a backpack with a change of clothes with you when you venture out into the park.  Even if it is warm when you head out, it may not be when you return!

Typical area temperatures:

Summer- Temperatures typically range between 70 and 80 degrees throughout the day, but can dip into the 30’s during the nighttime hours.  This is most typical for higher elevations.  Guests can expect afternoon thunderstorms throughout the summer.

Winter – Winters in Yellowstone can be cold and unpredictable.  Expect temperatures between 30 degrees and 20 below zero throughout the day.  Snow can be expected at any time throughout the year.

Spring and Fall- Ranging anywhere from freezing to 60 degrees throughout the daytime, spring and fall regularly have varying temperatures throughout the day.  Guests can expect dips into the teens and single digit temps in the evening.  Be sure to bring a warm coat, hat, and gloves with you!
